Thank you to Laura Wilhelm, Kaitlynn Williams, Olivia Marshall, and Shayla Wilhelm for representing Portville at regional science fairs. Special congratulations go out to Laura and Shayla Wilhelm. The two sisters just finished competing in two science competitions in less than a week receiving an outstanding variety of awards. Laura placed first at the Alfred State Science and Engineering Competition receiving $250 while Shayla received $500 for best of show. The two also competed at the International Science and Engineering qualifier at St.Bonaventure. Laura was awarded second place and Shayla was awarded first place both receiving additional cash prizes. Even better yet, Laura was selected to compete at the Genius Olympiad against students from around the world, all expenses paid. Shayla was selected as the regional representative for the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair held in Phoenix, Arizona. Shayla will spend a week in Phoenix, all expenses paid, interacting with students from more than 75 countries and territories where several million dollars are awarded to over 1700 students from around the world. Good luck to both students as you represent PCS in your future competitions, your hard work is greatly appreciated.

Check out this great article from the Olean Times Herald highlighting Portville students doing great things! Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES students place at regional SkillsUSA, look ahead to state competition By TOM DINKI, Olean Times Herald OLEAN — Tommy Hall searched a room for evidence in front of a New York State Police trooper. Meagan Ruggles’ nail styling was judged by actual salon professionals. Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES students like Hall and Ruggles placed in several categories at the regional SkillsUSA competition earlier this month and can move on to the state competition next month. If they perform well at the state-level competition April 24-26 in Syracuse, they could earn a spot at the SkillsUSA Championships, which is held in June in Louisville, K.Y., and involves more than 6,500 contestants in 103 separate career and technical education events. “I think it’s an overall learning experience being able to go out there and to compete against other peer members, dealing with and getting to know people that are associated with you in the same field,” said CA BOCES criminal justice instructor Todd McLaughlin Tuesday at CA BOCES’ Olean Career and Technical Education Center. “And you never know when you’re going to run into those troopers. They might be your partner somewhere down the line. Same thing with cosmetology, maybe they’re going to work at their salons.” “So it’s an opportunity to get your name out there,” he added. The regional competition held March 5 at Alfred State College, the 30th annual SkillsUSA Region I Leadership Conference and Skills Olympics, involved more than 950 high school students from Region I BOCES districts, including CA BOCES. Students were tested on the skills they’ve learned in their specific CTE programs, as well as the soft skills like job interviews. For Hall, a Portville Central School senior taking criminal justice classes at CA BOCES’ Olean campus, his competition involved fingerprinting and conducting a room search. He had to point out the key pieces of evidence in a faux crime scene, including fake drugs. “At first, everything is overwhelming,” said Hall, who placed second in the criminal justice division, “but once you slow down and just do what you were taught, it’s really kind of simple.” One of the major benefits for Hall was hearing feedback from state police. “Anything that they think I should have done better, they would tell me, they would show me,” he said, “and it just made me better all around.” Ruggles, a Portville Central School senior in the cosmetology program on the CA BOCES Olean campus, placed first in the nail technician division. She was aided by Hailey Stout, a fellow Portville senior and CA BOCES cosmetology student, who served as the hand model. Ruggles had an allotted amount of time to complete Stout’s nails, which included filing, acrylic application, French tip design, as well as painting a design with an Emoji theme. While she’s become skilled at nails, Ruggles originally wanted to focus on hair. “Now that I’ve gotten into the program, I really like all of it. I have a lot of people ask me, ‘What’s your favorite part?’ I don’t have a favorite part. I really enjoy all of it,” she said. “I think it’s a really good career because I can do what I want to do and have fun with it — not do something that is boring to me.” She and Hall said they’re grateful they can prepare for their future careers while still in high school due to BOCES. “BOCES has definitely given me a lot, especially because we can get our license right after this,” Ruggles said. “We don’t need further college for it. We can start our careers sooner, doing what we want.”

What a great night of basketball for a worthy cause! Twenty-eight alumni from 1976-2018 played in the 5th Annual Alumni Game tonight at the PCS gym! It was the “Young” team vs. the “Somewhat Older” team and they put on quite a show! The Older team pulled out the win!! Proceeds from the player entry fees, spectators, 50/50 raffle, concession stand and halftime foul shooting/half court shot competition all go to help defray costs of Portville’s own Bobby George and Marcia (Schott) Wray as they battle cancer. THANK YOU to all who came out and played, watched, or volunteered tonight to make it an awesome event! PCS — Pride Creates Success...Success Creates Pride!
