Special Announcement from the Athletic Department:
Athletes of the month for MARCH
Congratulations to the following girls for being named Athletes of the Month for March for Girls Basketball: Mia Welty & Lilly Bentley.
Mia, a junior captain, is a defensive specialist and either defends the opponent’s main ball-handler or top scorer and is the point of our press. She has a knack for getting deflections on passes that lead to easy transition baskets for the Lady Panthers. She led the team this year in average plus/minus ratio which measures a player’s efficiency in respect to steals and assists, compared to turnovers. For the games she played in March, Mia recorded 25 steals and 26 assists, while averaging 7.8 points and 3.1 rebounds.
Lilly, a freshman forward, averaged an impressive double-double with 11.7 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She gets up the floor well and is part of the reason our transition offense is successful. She works hard on both ends of the court but has a knack for getting us extra chances on the offensive end with her rebounding skills.
Both of these Lady Panthers contributed to our respectable 12 and 5 season.
Congratulations to the following boys: Hunter Griffin and Luke Petruzzi
Hunter finished the season averaging 8 points per game and 4 rebounds per game as well as carrying the highest +/- ratio on the team with +21 and dishing out the most assists on the team with 44. While his leadership as a captain and his heart and hustle helped the panthers all season long his effort in the post season really paid dividends for Portville. He averaged 14 points per game in the playoffs and scored 20 in the semi-finals. Hunter will be sorely missed next year for not only his basketball ability but his role as a teammate and a leader.
Luke averaged 14 points and 4 rebounds per game for the Panthers this season. His attitude and effort in March was a huge contributor to us finishing 9-6 and making it to the semi-finals in sectional play. Luke averaged 25 points per game in the playoffs and was leading scorer in both the quarterfinals with 22 points and in the semi’s where he scored 27. We look forward to seeing him continue to grow as a player and an athlete next season.
Again, congrats to these 4 athletes for their hard work and dedication to basketball. Please see Mrs. Colligan for your shirt and certificates.
Reminder to students – Sign ups are currently going on for Wrestling, Softball, Baseball, Track, and Golf. Check the information posted outside of the High School Main Office today!
